Late last year, we modestly celebrated the sixth anniversary of LPH Records by releasing a 10-inch that reconnected us with our very first EP by bringing back two of the artists who contributed to it, Runaway and Soft Rocks. Now, as a sort of companion to that, we have LPH___VI , a 7-inch that gives shine to a couple other names that have been spotted on LPH party flyers of old and back catalog credits, Jacques Renault and Daniel T. Both these are fun, flavorful little disco nugs united by funky bass guitar fretwork and plenty of sassy woodblock, though Jacques’ leans towards the goofy and daffy, whereas Daniel’s brings some synth-pop seriousness into the frame. As befits the format, both hover around four minutes in length.

the label will not be tied to a specific genre, as we will instead focus on releasing any kind of music that we feel is a little bit different and interesting, but somehow make sense in this day and age. for our first batch of releases, we will be focusing on japanese music. to be honest, i have been watching the recent rise of global interest in japanese music with a skeptical eye, not sure of how to feel about all these labels overseas licensing great albums that were birthed in our country. but then, i was told by somebody i greatly respect that i should do something similar with mule, and put our own spin on it, which sounded like a good idea to me. after a period of procrastination, i finally got around to doing it. we are starting things off with a compilation of japanese disco, boogie and soul music that we selected from a modern dance music perspective ? the kind of songs that we feel would intrigue music fans across the world.

Following successful disco excavation from the Caribbean to South Africa, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul booked a first class ticket to Narita to bring you the latest release, Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk: 1981 to 1988. This compilation presents 12 of the most memorable and sought-after songs of the era recorded by female artists. The music is a reflection of the unbridled optimism, technological achievement, excess and exuberance of Bubble-era Japan. More than catchy melodies and funky baselines, these are reflections of a time when Japan was the center, and future of the world. Compiled by Eli Cohen (Alliance Upholstery) and Deano Sounds (Cultures of Soul), Tokyo Nights includes tracks by Hitomi Tohyama, Junko Ohashi, Mizuki Koyama, Kaoru Akimoto, Aru Takamura, Mariko Tone, Rie Murakami, RA MU, Kikuchi Momoko and Yumi Seino. Each selection celebrates the unique traits and meticulous production that define the sound.

'88年～'90年にアパルトヘイト下の南アフリカで生み出された魅惑に溢れたエレクトロニック・ダンス・ミュージックをRush Hour首領Antalと現地は南アフリカのDJ、Okapiがコンパイルした2枚組コンピ・アルバムが登場！！当時の南アフリカでしか手に入らなかったであろうカルト音源が満載の全12曲！！

Through the work of Awesome Tapes From Africa and others, we now know more than ever about South Africa's electronic music scene in the 1980s. Here, Rush Hour attempts to fill in the gaps in our education via a fine, double-album exploration of South African dance music produced at the tail end of the decade. It's an interesting and hugely enjoyable set full of tracks that fuse elements of local styles such as bubblegum (that's SA synth-pop, effectively) with sounds and grooves more often found in contemporaneous house music from New York, Chicago and Italy. It's a blueprint that resulted in music that was variously deep, dreamy, bubbly, warm, synth-heavy and loved-up, but never less than clearly African in origin. Pantsula, then, is a superb history lesson packed full of positive, sun-ripe gems.
