French house producer Frederic Berthet aka DJ Steef has had a quick and rather impressive rise since his first EP for Toy Tonics, back in a distant 2012. Extensive releases for the likes of Biomix, Retrofit and the present Numoment Recordings have helped the producer to solidify his sound, and appeal to a new generation of house-hungry club-fiends. This new four-tracker is disco-flavoured, but firmly house-driven, starting with the vocal-led bump that is "Levaned", followed by the more traditionally Chicago-sounding groove "New Player (Old Rules mix)". Side B breaks out the disco strings through "Kimbo Combo", a tune that nonetheless launches a heavy kick onto the arrangement, and "Frequence" provides a little bit of hazy, smoked-out house vibing for the smaller hours.

Smokecloud Records has long claimed to be the World's only imprint dedicated to Detroit Beatdown style reworks of funk, soul, disco and boogie gems. Whether this is true or not, there's no denying the consistent quality of the imprint's output. This latest release features contributions from two label stalwarts; owner and A&R man Osmose, and New Yorker The Silver Rider. The latter kicks things off with "I Wanna Be", a rolling, soft touch head-nodder that fuses elements of a tactile soul cut with hypnotic, pitched-down house beats and filter sweeps. It's rather good, but nowhere near as inspired as Osmose's "Trust", which turns a classic Motor City soul cut into a smooth, toe-tapping Beatdown shuffler.

The title track kicks the EP off with a killer funk groove that Riccio works into something we think Mark E would be happy with. Dyson Jam is an original cut that channels some of his inner Moodymann vibes - heads down, lights down, fader up...The final cut of the EP Mystical Stretcher, is a late night jazzy Funk number. "Bossa" revels in choppy broken beats and plenty of choice samples in a most loose and soulful of concoctions, while "Lazy" cools down to a simmer with subtle disco licks making the most immersive of deep house jams. Tenderlonious returns home to his label 22a with this stunning six track EP. As the title suggests 'On Flute' shows us how diverse Tenderlonious's musicianship is as he embellishes each song with his signature flute sound. 'Ghana' sets the pace of the record with up-tempo afro beats, complimented by keys, strings, a distinctive lead synth and of course a soaring flute solo. 'Autumn Leaves' follows with a more UK broken-beat flavour, revealing a darker sense of atmosphere - think 'Bitches Brew' with a modern feel... Side A closes with 'Oedo Bushi,' a comparatively stripped back tune, a simple conga rhythm with flute and xylophone solos weaving in and out as if in conversation with each other - it's the type of tune reminiscent of something that you might hear in a classic samurai film like 'Shogun Assassin' or 'Harakiri'. to be continued...

Title-track "Bitcoin" by Cocoon recording artist CAVAAN kicks off the EP in fine style with demanding drums and repetitive chord progressions par excellence which are supplemented by resounding pulses of warm bass. Further elements are expertly added into the equation soon enough, such as a warped spoken-word vocal, numerous melodic textures and trippy flourishes which all come together, building and yielding as the track drops back into its rolling, sun-kissed groove. On the flip-side is "Santeria," by french artist duo ROAR which is marginally the more restrained of the two tracks on offer, characterized by a succession of subtle, misshapen sounds, twisted effects and an ascending synth which compliments the punchy percussion and melodic stabs.
