Gospel is not something we often delve into at AOTN, I like the odd track but to make the grade it has to be really good. I used to play 'He's Alright' (the B-Side of this 45) from the LP back in the day when you could pick it up for $10. At that point nobody cared or was looking for Gospel Disco (especially on LP) but Times and tastes catch up with us out there on the front line ;) so when I heard Floating Points play 'The Power of Your Love' at the Plastic People closing party I was surprised as I had all but forgotten about the LP (credit where credit is due). I jumped into action, hit up Calvin Bridges who wrote and recorded the LP (and is still recording gospel to this day) and he was happy to help out, so here we have it, A now historic track flipped with my preferred B side and old secret weapon, this will fly.

It's been some time since they dropped fresh productions of their own, so this new four-tracker comes as a welcome injection of seasoned, high-end grooves for the slow but heavy part of the night. "Piece Together" is a natural opening gambit, letting acid basslines rub up against delayed strafes of synth and subtle guitar chops in the most grooving of ways. Ethimm's second EP When in dark delivers the groups signature tension music with moods oscillating between suicidal heartbreak and conciliatory optimism. In the opening track Why (a cover of the Rhythm and Sound classic), producer Elisabeth Thimm sets the stage for guest singer Veronique to mourn love's loss, while Brian Gimmel's improvised piano licks hold strong agains the songs relentless bassline. The follow-up track Late features Lexx's dreamy lyrics gracing a subtle dance foor tune for spaced-out souls. The B side opens with Ethimm's love for dub. Next is a freaked-out meditation on what has been and will be, while the fnal track Done slowly creeps towards its peak, refecting on dark days where light may have not been much in sight, but going forward sees optimism, increased resolution, and drive.

The inaugural release on Pietro bh's Place To Blame imprint comes from Offenbach-based oddball DJ Slyngshot. The Yappin Records' founder's slim discography is full of curious, off-kilter gems, and this 12" is no different. Interestingly, his original versions are tucked away on the flip, though both "OTown" (a loopy, dusty, organ-heavy jazz-house/MPC hip-hop hybrid) and "Ain't Got No Time" (a tougher, more locked-in jazz-house groover) are impressive. The A-side is instead taken up by Japan Blues re-makes of the same tracks. The Berceuse Heroique championed producer teases out the head-nodding aspects of "OTown" whilst adding some distorted low-end grunt, before delivering a wonky, surging, synth-laden re-shape of "Ain't Got No Time".
