After a break of 12 years, pioneering West London broken beat collective Bugz In The Attic have reunited to deliver a brand new, ultra-limited 12" containing fresh revisions of 1981 Chaka Khan classic "I Know You, I Live You". The A-side "Chakattic Mix" is particularly wonderful, layering Khan's ultra-positive, life-affirming vocal above the crew's trademark bruk-up beats, jazzy bass and sensational jazz-funk synths (provided, no doubt, by original crew-member Kaidi Tathtam). Over on side B, they up the spine-tingling "end of night" factor via a version containing just music and vocals, before once more proving their immense drum programming skills via a delay-laden "Bonus Beats" DJ tool. In a word: brilliant.

Alex "Omar" Smith is certainly "One of a Kind". Like fellow Detroiters Kenny Dixon Jr and Theo Parrish, he has achieved cult status amongst serious deep house heads primarily by following his own path and sticking a solitary digit towards convention. That and being seriously good at what he does, of course. He begins this latest EP in confident mood, joining the dots between vintage New Jersey garage and bouncy deep house on "Less Pain", before wrapping slipped '80s synth-pop chords around a killer (machine) percussion track. Best of all, though, is title track "One of a Kind", a luscious chunk of slowly unfurling deep house positivity rich in ear-pleasing synthesizer motifs, surging chords and rush-inducing musicality.

Limited 100 vinyl pressure on this one from an undisclosed European producer who has been responsible for more than a few choice cuts over his 25 years of releasing records. Burning Up lights the dance floor by squeezing every last drop of energy out of just a few key elements, a modulating pulsing cross-rhythm bass snakes around driving disco beats with choice vocal samples adding the final bit of ear candy. Minimal, a bit twisted, but hooky as hell. On the flip we have Becoming Cyclonic, a far deeper excursion where 808 toms dance around a repeating fretless bass melody. An immersive and euphoric melding of drum machines, synths and 12bit jazz-fusion samples, all being put through the sonic mincer and coming out like the proverbial gourmet sausage. Yum!

Well, speculate no more, the new tracks are in. In a reading group one might sum it up like this: "Avalon", the A-side, could be read as a crossover of "The Mists Of Avalon", "The Tin Drum" and "The Jungle Book". Rendered into club-lingo, that means: profoundly filtered tribal drums and a feverish haze of noise evoke a certain tropical vibe that is whipped up by the snaredrum frenzy of a hyperactive marching-band-leader. Highly energetic stuff leading into a soothing break of heavenly voices, sounding as if Guinevere herself is yearning for the next mighty drumroll to wreak havoc on the dancefloor. This fragile melodic insertion aside, you won't find many sentimental concessions on this tune, yet an irresistibly pounding floor-appeal.

The next missive from Fango's Degustibus stable is from Ditongo aka Batongo who uses this alias for disco edits. As legend has it, he was previously a Eurodance producer that released some hits in the 90s. After a traumatic experience, he escaped to Peru and retired from the music business. During those years he composed music for himself and then sold the rights to a label to release all those tracks - on the condition that his real identity was not revealed. This is part of a new series named Editales, and on the first volume here we have got the lo-slung tropical vibes of "Berimbau" on the A side, and the well funky (and rather sensual!) vocal delight "You Know Nothing" on the flip.

MAPS is a project by a London-based Lithuanian drummer and producer, Marijus Aleksa. This labour of love is the culmination of many hours spent touring and in-session with some of the greats of London’s bubbling contemporary jazz scene, resulting in Marijus’s first solo project to date. The EP combines elements of jazz, afrobeat and electronic music through free-form jamming and remixing, with movement and the dance floor firmly in mind. Musicians featured on the record have been playing and recording with likes of The Sun Ra Arkestra, Blue Lab Beats, Tony Allen, Mark de Clive Lowe, Ibibio Sound Machine, Seun Kuti, Matthew Herbert and many others. The record has received air play and support from the likes of Bradley Zero, Marshmello, Aaron L and Ashley Henry to name but a few.
