To date, long serving but low key Detroiter Sharif Laffrey has specialised in delivering epic cuts that prioritize hypnotic grooves, raw drums and subtle musical shifts. For his debut on Lovefingers' ESP Institute label he ratchets up the intensity by a few dozen notches, basing fearsome A-side "Tangier" around a druggy, full-throttle groove, wild and psychedelic acid lines, snaking Middle Eastern horn solos and the kind of rumbling bassline that will sound awesome blasting out of a meaty soundsystem. B-side "Everything Is Nice" is deeper and groovier in tone, with Laffrey wrapping bleeping melody lines and echoing vocal samples around a crunchy drum machine rhythm. It's very good, even if it does lack the restless energy of the exotic A-side.

Sharif Laffrey is something of an unheralded hero of the underground Detroit scene. Active since the halcyon days of the mid-90s Motor City rave movement, his sporadic releases are rarely less than superb (as those who copped last year's radical, thrillingly wayward acid house mutilation of Pet Shop Boys "Always On My Mind/In My House" will attest). The single-sided "And Dance" is another delightfully wonky epic; a 14-minute fusion of chopped-up Italo-disco loops, rising and falling acid lines and heavily manipulated spoken word vocals. There are multiple stops, starts, breakdowns, drops and build-ups, with Laffrey subtly building up the pressure via waves of wonky Motor City electronics throughout. There aren't many of these around, so act fast if you want to secure a copy.

Sharif Laffrey is one of the great unsung heroes of Detroit's dance music scene, having been instrumental in putting on parties in the Motor City for many years and spinning records in all kinds of legendary spots. When he's not busy promoting, Laffrey also finds time to turn out productions under aliases such as Quadrant and Maersk. Primarily though, his recent work has been under his own name for the likes of Love On The Rocks and Discos Capablanca, who he returns to here with a single sided sure shot entitled "Always". It's a heated, jacking club track that screams of Laffrey's Detroit roots, with an early house thrust and wild 80s-style sampling that will set the party alight.
