Needless to say, Toby knows his way around the studio but he’s also equally adept when it comes to cutting and splicing, as you can hear on the title track of this special 12” for Resista, re-editing and embellishing this slice of pure sunshine. For the flip, Toby puts his production hat back on, building a deep, afro-influenced house track and deftly layering the same vocalist on top. Pure balearic bliss! He runs the prolific vinyl label Aficionado Recordings together with fellow DJ Jason Boardman, a project that started out as a Sunday club night. Since 2012, they’ve dished out more than a handful of 12” releases with an ever-surprising selection of underground acts at the fringes of what might be called Balearic.

Dekmantel presents Esa Williams's debut EP Aweh. With his discography growing steadily over the past couple of years, the South African artist constantly breathes new energy into his music by incorporating global influences in his work. This is no exception and includes his promising hit track 'Blast' which is a perfect mixture of eerie Afro-noise with staggering traditional Gogo music vocals. The B side covers two well thought gems including "Rift Valley", a house track mixed up with drums and vocals from the East African collective Santuri and Abakisimba. Aweh's 'Rent-A-Disc' represents the name of a Cape Town based music library that opened its doors in the early to late 90s.

Description:

It would be fair to say that the Afro Synth label has dug deep for this latest reissue. Little is known about Burnin Beat, an obscure South African disco outfit who released their sole 12", It's Hot, on RPM way back in 1979. They're a great example of an outfit that, for whatever reason, fell through the cracks. The title track, a lolloping, 11-minute disco workout rich in fluid synth lines, rubbery slap bass, sparring instrument solos and the powerful vocals of Olive Masigna, is something of a long-lost gem. Original flipside "Searchin" is almost as good, with Masigna adding a touching vocal to a backing track that pushes the band's favourite Moog synthesizer to the fore.
