One-sided 12" affair from Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound that pits the Cowboy Rhythmbox project of Richard X and Nathan Gregory Wilkins up against the production skills of Livity Sound main man Kowton. First released last year, the original version of "Fantasma" summed up the project's slightly tongue in cheek approach, pairing outlandish synth motifs with thundering percussive excess and thick EBM basslines. It was understandably a hit with the Comeme crew and it's likely Kowton's remix will crossover into many DJ sets too. The Livity man remains quite faithful to Cowboy Rhythmbox's intentions, but cranks the pressure up somewhat for a near-perfect five minute DJ tool.

The hip-house boom was in full effect, thanks to Tyree Cooper's efforts, and Trax responded with this dope double-header. "Power Move" is straight up hip hop, boom-bapping and backslapping like any old school favourite, but it's the flip, produced by Trax regular Lidell Townsell, 'I'll Make You Dance' that does the business here with rolling acid bass, a rib rattling kick and ja-ja-ja-jacking snares.
Kool Rock Steady, also known as Edward Rudolph, had serious credentials for an MC, being cousin of one Africa Bambaataa. This release is also notable for yet another misspelling of Lidell Townsell's Christian name (Lydell, since you ask).

New York's King Street Sounds have been active in resurfacing Kerri Chandler material from the late 90's, and we're now onto the third instalment of the series - a straight-up thumbs-up from us here at Juno Towers. "Harder Gets Higher" is a stone-cold Chandler banger, and here we have the original mix in all its funky, moody glory powered by masterful tribal beats and deep, sweltering bass. "Grass Cutter" features on its '623 club mix' and, again, Chandler is supreme king of the bassline, but its his dub version of "Awareness" by Canada Project that works particularly well on today's dance floor - a minimal, stripped-back groove with icy chords and a warm vocal carrying all that weight through. Sickness.

The title track is a classic slice of German techno; it has shades of early Force Inc thanks to its tranced out chords and pace - cruising along just below 130bpm for its ten-minute duration - and the raw energy of Tresor in the shape of its gnarly acid line. The musical elements sound much more pronounced on the beatless version, with the chords assuming a slightly menacing edge. However, this is really all about the original version, a tripped out, hypnotic that digs deep into the German electronic music psyche.

Yuri's productions mix jazzy and funky vibes with electronic elements, which inevitably calls to mind the classic Detroit house sound. They have a warm and authentic feeling to them, thanks to his bass, guitar and keys abilities. Poducers such as Vakula have relied on his instrumentalist skills, but on Polyphonic Mind it is his turn to call on other musicians. 'Nothing In The City' features his friend Yuri Smirnov on the alto saxophone and kicks off this release on a laid back groove, which becomes more energetic in the second half of the track. Trumpet player Victor Netesov a.k.a. Humsafar joins them on 'Polyphonic Mind' for a full jazzy session. On the B side, Shulgin reveals his experimental facet with two jams using synths and delays. 'Livetrackrecording (Dubby)' leans into hypnotic territory while '#1stereo (Analog Jam)' rounds up the record with dreamy explorations.
