Mateis E Aqir made his debut last year via a limited-edition cassette that joined the dots between classic krautrock sounds and contemporary experimental electronics. On this debut vinyl excursion, the producer changes tack slightly, serving up a simmering, six-track affair that sashays attractively been shuffling, ultra-deep house ("Chrimbo Ra"), woozy dancefloor hypnotism ("You Have To Live"), electro-influenced ambient house ("Ever Fruit"), bubbly dreaminess ("Turaco Crystalls") and hard-to-pigeonhole electronic soundscapes ("Keinguao" and the hallucinogenic tropical brilliance of closer "Dreamy Prophet", which contains reverb-laden steel guitar motifs amongst its many attractions). As first EPs go, it's pretty darn good.

Born in Rio in 1940, Helio won a guitar from his father at age 12.After working in sugar mills or as a sales clerk in record stores, he started performing at Rio nightclubs (like Plaza) and Sao Paulo. In 1975 he signed to RCA Victor on which he released his first LP, "Matheus Segundo Matheus" With arrangements by Oberdan "Black River" Magalhaes, Ze Rodrix and Chiquinho de Moraes with participation of Azymuth as a support band withg a total of 128 musicians involved int he recording. Unfortuanly this much deserved reissue didn't make it to press before Helio Passed last year, but we are most humble and proud to do it justice. One of my favourite Brazilian LP's just to listen to.

Since first pitching up on Favorite Recordings a few years back, Russian saxophonist Andre Solomko has delivered a string of impressive albums and singles that gleefully join the dots between smooth jazz, '80s jazz-funk and Afro-fired disco-funk. Le Deltaplane, his latest full-length excursion, explores similar sonic territory, moving from languid, jazz-funk-influenced soul ("Le Deltaplane", featured in both vocal and instrumental versions), to deliciously smooth and glassy-eyed disco-jazz ("Moonbeach Disco"), via a range of sumptuous, solo-heavy workouts that sound like that could have been featured on a sought-after, turn-of-the-'80s jazz-funk obscurity (the wonderfully loved-up "Aquaplane" and "Summer '79"). Throughout, Solomko and company's arrangements and instrumentation are little less than sublime.

Lullabies For Insomniacs is pleased to present Yasuo Sugibayashi and The Mask Of The Imperial Family; a compilation of music from Mimic Records 1980-1982. . Yasuo began his musical career playing guitar in a high school band, in 1980 after moving to Tokyo and immersing himself in various musical groups he founded Mimic Records. Inspired heavily by the art movements of the late 1970's, in particular the innovations of Brian Eno and David Cunningham he purchased a Roland System 100M. He was in search of a sound and the synthesizer had great potential. Simultaneously he had started experimenting with tape, playing with the tactility of the medium so he could understand how to best adapt it for his pieces. Yasuo explored ancient ethnic music and wanted to combine his influences with daily experiences of city life.

Sebastien Doring - better known as veteran deep house and disco fusionist Lovebirds - has been pretty quiet of late, by his previously prolific standards at least. Happily, his first single of 2018 is one of his strongest releases to date. "Dove Sei" was seemingly inspired by Tullio de Piscopo's Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)", though the A-side "Original Deep Mix" is far dreamier and synthesizer-heavy than that cut, and is underpinned by a particularly chugging electronic groove. The Raiders of the Lost Arp mix, rich in glistening but urgent guitar riffs and jazzy Rhodes solos, is arguably the pick of the pair, though SIRS' more Italo-disco influenced take is also rather tasty.
