Che "Chesus" Ahmed dons the now familiar Ear Jeffers alias and returns to Ten Thousand Yen for the first time since 2016's well-received Gloria EP. A-side "Mysteries" is something of a spacey, synth-laden affair, with fuzzy analogue synth lines and fizzing electronics clustering around a restless, densely layered house groove. If Kraftwerk made deep house, it would probably sound like this. Ahmed takes a different approach on the flip, successfully peppering a chunky, redlined rhythm track with jazzy Rhodes motifs, jazz-funk flourishes and a cleverly manipulated vocal sample. Loose and languid but also tough as teak, it's arguably the more ear catching of the two tracks.

Mystic heaters from the one they call Deadboy. His debut on Ten Thousand Yen and the first output from his new Montreal HQ. "Columns" introduces this new chapter with a glistening, ethereal sound palette. As if we've found ourselves in some icy cave, light refracting off huge crystals while rivers of green, purple and blue languidly wash around our feet. "Glass Lake" plunges us through a luminescent pot-hole as we adventure further into the abyss. "Ten Cups" celebrating our near-death maneuver through the danger with soothing, caressing hand, delicate melodies floating aloft a bubbling rhythm while plumes of melodies percolate from deep underwater. Finally, "Ten Cups" sees a ambient reduction, offering us those gorgeous sound bubbles without any drums - simply letting the beautiful fragments ricochet off our receptive ears. A fully realized vision of sound here from Deadboy! Highly recommended and super limited. Don't sleep!

Earl has been with Ten Thousand Yen for longer than you may think. Indeed, this shadowy producer is already responsible for some fine dancefloor moments. "The Goose" on Welsh label Catapult,. the C in C.R.S.T. from some of TTY's earliest releases to the spanking "Goodfoot" EP as Chesus and more recently his twisted disco remix of Daneeka's "What's it Gonna Be?" with Seven Davis Jr. As Earl Jeffers he's really found his sound and this is one of his strongest Eps to date. These tunes have been flaming all year in the clubs. "Gloria" and "Pleasure Signal" unloading that thick, heavy, looped up funk which should roll out of the festival soundsystems like treacle. "Return To Forever" gets two outings on the B-side; upping the intensity somewhat as Jeffers fires some blasting mainroom techno at our ears. Proper essential stuff.
