Selva Discos fulfills its duty of giving a new life to Fernando Falcao's long lost LPs with the reissue of his album Barracas Barrocas, originally released through Egberto Gismonti's cult record label Carmo in 1987. Somehow, an original copy of this album is even more elusive than its predecessor Memoria das Aguas and it is a pity that such a stunning piece of music was kept apart from listeners worldwide for so long. The follow-up to Memoria das Aguas was recorded in Sao Paulo after Fernando Falcao returned from his exile in France in 1984. Selva Discos returns to the LP reissue game with a bang ? by giving a new life to the stunning and very sought-after Memoria das Aguas album by Fernando Falcao. Originally recorded in 1979 in Paris but only released independently in Brazil in 1981, the album comes complete with genre-hopping explorations that swirl around ambient soundscapes, lively jazz, experimental-leanings, Afro-rhythms and a unique blend of Latin grooves and French pop with a Brazilian accent, but it also comes with a story as deeply unique as the music. It's another tried-and-tested dancefloor burner: Edson Conceicao's "Filhos de Gandhi", a homage to the "Carnaval da Bahia", on its beatless original version and the drumtastic Mike Burns edit on the flip, featured on Selvagem's Boiler Room set. The fourth release of Selva Discos is one that has been bursting audiences into flames for a good while. Barbatuques, a well-known Brazilian group of body percussionists, adapted "Baiana" back in 2005 (first released on the "O Seguinte E Esse" album) and since then it became a staple of their concerts, getting crazy reactions from the children to the elder, being featured on soundtracks and sampled by trap duo Tropkillaz. The original is a modern folk song from Bahia composed by Maria do Carmo Barbosa, but it was the mouth harp sound and the stomping beat on the Barbatuques' arrangement that imprinted its trademark sound - like the first lightning strikes before the storm.

Here, two tracks from that set are given the remix treatment. Selvagem and Carrot Green join forces on the A-side to deliver a lolloping, soft touch house mix of "Cantico Brasileiro No. 3 (Kamajura)". Wrapping Rita's drifting vocal, Amazonian flutes and bustling analogue synth-bass around a solid kick-drum and layered hand percussion, it's something of an epic. Arguably even better is Joakim's flipside rub of "Lamento Africanus/Rictus", which sees bleeping new age melodies and foreboding synth lines rise above a bed of dreamy vocal samples and hypnotic drum machine hits.

An original copy of the Brasileira LP by Brazilian singer Maria Rita Stumpf has been on top of collectors' and music lovers' wishlist for the past couple of years, since "Cantico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiura)" broke out and cast a spell worldwide ? from Japan to Brazil, from Norway to South Africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. The good news are that the LP will be available again in its entirety in a new, glossy, loud and clear pressing released through Selva Discos, a new label run by Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser (the DJ/production duo known as Selvagem) in partnership with JD Twitch's Optimo Music. It's a legit reissue overviewed by Maria Rita Stumpf herself, the music being remastered from the remaining DAT tape of the original release and artwork faithfully updated by Brazilian design studio Colletivo, featuring liner notes by the singer/songwriter.
