Vakula's illicit edit series continues with a seriously heavyweight offering. Number 5 contains clever tweaks on War's "Galaxy" and Emerson's "Sending All My Love Out", two pillars of jazz-funk and electro-boogie respectively and well due a night out on the town at your local discotheque! Emerson's joint is particularly sought after, still demanding four and a half ton online after being made mahoosive by one Tom Noble. Final scores are 2-1, with Vakula pinching one back at the last minute through the rather inspired A2, a perc heavy disco-boogie cut with solid slappy B, nice girly chorus and plenty of wigged out guitar scratches.

Having dazzled disco lovers via a trio of sold-out 10" singles, the shadowy VEDIT crew delivers their first hand-stamped 12". This time round, the publicity-shy scalpel collective is focused more on left-of-centre synth-pop cuts from the new wave era. Our pick is undoubtedly the epic flipside revision, which takes a particularly wayward and intoxicating mid-'80s cut - think early Chicago house bass, discordant synth horns, experimental dub effects and half-spoken vocals - and turns it into something of an inspired beast. In contrast the two A-side cuts tamper with two slightly better known (though still relatively overlooked) left-of-centre synth-pop gems from 1984 and '85 respectively. They will no doubt get more rotations, but lack the insane thrills of the B-side edit.

Hot on the heels of the VEDIT crew's second sold-out 10" comes volume three. As usual, there's no info about either the tracks going under the scalpel or those involved, just a trio of on-point reworks to add sparkle to your DJ sets. We're particularly enjoying the A-side interpretation, which offers a spacey and lightly dubbed version of a fizzing disco-funk number full of spiraling synthesizer solos, spacey effects, clipped guitars and sweaty drum solos. On the flipside the publicity-shy scalpel fiends first rearrange a Clavinet and electric piano-solo laden disco-funk wriggler before dipping their toes into the multi-coloured world of cosmic disco with predictably impressive results.

Description:

Less than two months after the first mysterious VEDIT release sold out in record time, the publicity-shy re-edit series returns. The first of a trio of untitled scalpel works is a thrilling low-slung dub disco affair that wraps sparkling electronic sounds and vocal samples around a surging, bass-heavy groove and stomping beats. Turn to the B-side for some solo-heavy jazz-funk/disco fusion (the instrumental workout "Track 2") and a wonderfully cosmic, dubbed-out take on the kind of smooth and spacey, late night cut that would once have inspired DJ Harvey and the rest of the Black Cock edits crew.

For obvious reasons, the person (or people) behind this mysterious re-edit release wish to remain nameless. There's not much we can tell you about the record's origin, either. What we can say, though, is that it's really rather good. The untitled A-side - a pleasingly reverential, scalpel edit style revision of a vaguely well-known disco scorcher rich in clipped guitar lines, stylish female vocals, rubbery bass and crunchy beats - is particularly potent. Over on the flipside you'll find the breezy, party-hearty sing-along that is "Track 2" and the righteous "Track 3". This particular rearrangement focuses on the addictive horn lines and bouncy groove of a lesser-known disco-funk workout, in the process delivering a particularly on-point edit. It truly is a "treasure full of pleasure".
