Having spent the last couple of years working on other projects, Mood Hut stalwarts Pender Street Steppers reunite for a welcome EP of loved-up goodness. They begin not with a chunk of saucer-eyed deep house, but rather the Balearic jazz-funk lusciousness of "Raining Again". The sunrise-friendly positivity continues with the ricocheting drum hits, fireside-warm bass and head-in-the-clouds synth melodies of "Mirror (Dub)", before the Canadian duo pays tribute to early Italian house on "Molto Bene". Turn to the flipside for the crunchy deep house dreaminess of "Blackboard" and the ultra-deep headiness of "No Need", in which the talented twosome makes great use of delay-laden drum machine hits and looped, dust-laden hip-hop vocal samples. All in all, this is arguably their strongest EP to date.

The man behind Church Records and half the force propelling Coastal Haze, Seb Wildblood, jumps over to Let's Play House for a laid back, suave four- tracker that'll smooth out that transition we're all going through as summer fades and the embers of autumn begin to burn brighter.“Necessary Happiness,” the first track, a improvisatory, noodly deep house ambler, sets the pace and tone. From there, the British producer ups the tempo a bit and explores the darker contours of red light-lit basement caves and after- hours haunts with the EP's title track. The flip is briefer: “Necessary Happiness (Mad Sax Mix)” is an embellished and brighter reprise of the A1, and “Pass the Pen” is a loose instrumental that has the bones of a break beat interlude built atop a jazzy hip-hop beat.

"Sunday Avenue" sees mid-shelved drums fluffed up by thick pad stabs while a tripping 303 line meanders and drifts in carefree abandon. Deep and bubbly and perfect for pitch black dancefloors. "6AM Mimosa" isn't named after an early morning DMT ritual as I initially thought, but instead a tasty and refreshing cocktail - half champagne and half orange juice which I reckon'll taste fuckin amazing at 6AM after a night of munching pills. Finally, "Tribal Dreams" sees an inspired vocal excursion with a more full frequency production aesthetic, not a million miles away from afro-house pioneer Osunlade or some of North America's finest house music (Rick Wilhite, Chez Damier, African Dream etc). Fiery, evocative, stripped back deep house at its finest.

Local Talk broadens the palette further with new music by Melbourne producer Prequel. The A side plays host to 'Freedom', a jazzy, undulating, mixed-up house sound that epitomises the spirit of Prequel in one track. It's loose and swinging beat infused with hip-shaking bass, heavily percussive piano riffs and crunchy claps only quieten to make way for an unidentified vocal, who politely thanks you for listening and hopes you have a great time while you are here. It sits perfectly in peak-time territory as it does on a late night afterhours tip. On the flip is the ever evolving 'Lefty'. A track that starts off playful & dreamy and features some truly lovely keyboard work. After settling into the groove it takes a sudden and sharp left turn and enters a harder acid focused workout. Another accomplished and celebratory affair from Prequel, it comes highly recommended.

Given his love of dusty sample manipulation, obscure source material, hazy deep house grooves and jazzy hip-hop beats, it's perhaps unsurprising that Robert "Cuthead" Arnold is on Mad Mats and Tooli's radar. Arnold is predictably in fine form on this first outing for the duo's Local Talk label. Fuck That Shit is packed full of highlights, not least the bumping title track, where cut-up hip-hop vocal samples ride a bustling, bumping, snare-heavy rhythm track. Also impressive is the similarly minded "Get Down" and "Potato Express", which is warm, jazzy, positive and laden with tasty jazz-funk, soul and disco samples. As usual, he rounds things off with a dash of blazed, Dilla-esque MPC abuse, in this case instrumental hip-hop shuffler "What Can I Say".

Che "Chesus" Ahmed dons the now familiar Ear Jeffers alias and returns to Ten Thousand Yen for the first time since 2016's well-received Gloria EP. A-side "Mysteries" is something of a spacey, synth-laden affair, with fuzzy analogue synth lines and fizzing electronics clustering around a restless, densely layered house groove. If Kraftwerk made deep house, it would probably sound like this. Ahmed takes a different approach on the flip, successfully peppering a chunky, redlined rhythm track with jazzy Rhodes motifs, jazz-funk flourishes and a cleverly manipulated vocal sample. Loose and languid but also tough as teak, it's arguably the more ear catching of the two tracks.

Having spent the last few years establishing himself as one of the world's most consistent makers of melodious, head-in-the-clouds deep house and blissful electronica, Project Pablo has secured a deal with Ninja Tune offshoot Technocolour. His first outing for the imprint is as colourful, hazy and tuneful as you'd expect, with glistening opener "Is It Dry?" setting the tone. The Montreal-based producer breaks up the beats a little on the cheeky but dreamy analogue funk of "No Sweat", before dropping a fistful of happy pills on the bustling, up-tempo dream house revivalism of "You Know". Finally, he explores his long-held love of breakbeat-driven tracks on the yearning but jaunty brilliance of closer "Oh Fer Sure".

Some licence negotiations and months later Satoshi Fumi agreed and made ‘Lalalalaland’, a brand new track to go along with ‘Toriton’ and make up this E.P. The title track has that unmistakable Detroit feel that takes you from melancholy to euphoria and back, while ‘Lalalalaland’ has been described by people hearing it in Red D’s sets this summer as ‘Japanese sunset trance’ or ‘end of the night eyes closed hands in the air stuff’.
