Attending Berklee College of Music after spending time living in both the United States and the United Kingdom, Hinata would study under the tutelage of pianist Patricia Laliberte, graduating from the esteemed American school in 1982. Returning to Japan after becoming disillusioned with his classical training, Hinata experimented with many different forms of music.   Music From Memory are back with their first 12” of 2019 in the form of a five track EP from prolific German drummer Curt Cress. Since the early 1970s Cress has worked with a number of high profile German bands such as Passport, Atlantis and Snowball as well as on cult Disco records with studio groups such as Tender Aggression and Chime. Working tirelessly as a session musician for countless German and International Jazz, Rock and Pop acts, Cress has also worked extensively as a Producer, most notably for Nina Hagen. Cress would also record a number of records as a solo artist, with his unique sensibility as a drummer given centre stage.

  Outro Tempo II: Electronic and Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1984-1996 is the second installment of Music From Memory’s Brazilian series. This volume picks up where the first Outro Tempo left off, shedding light on a new wave of experimentalism that emerged in Brazil in the late 1980s and 1990s. The twenty tracks collected uncover another area of Brazilian music that looked to the future for inspiration. This time it drifts beyond the rainforest and into the pulsating heart of Brazil’s great cities, where it meets a generation of young artists eager to radically change the face of contemporary Brazilian music.   Music From Memory’s latest release sees the reissue of G.B. Beckers' 'Walkman' album from 1982. A painter and musician from Aachen, Germany, Gunther Beckers created his third album ’Walkman' to coincide with an exhibition of his latest body of artwork in 1982. Released on his very own 'Milky Music' label with a run of just 500 copies and original pieces of artwork included with some copies, most copies of the album however remained amongst art collectors and with the painter himself. Rediscovered a few years ago through a friend of Music From Memory in the archives of a local radio station where all but one of the stations copies had been destroyed, it has been an album the label have been in love with since the first listen.

Following on from a retrospective compilation of solo work and an album of recent work in 2016, Music From Memory continue to explore the work of Spanish ambient and experimental pioneer Suso Saiz. Sharing a curiosity for American minimalist and Non-Western music, the pair began to share music through many listening sessions, during which the idea slowly evolved to try and make music together.

In the spring of 2016, Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk got together in the studio for the first time since they recorded Clouds, the critically acclaimed debut album from their Gaussian Curve project. By the time they reconvened in Sterk's new studio in Amsterdam, a stone's throw away from the temporary, second-‐floor space where they recorded Clouds, much had changed. When they first got together in March 2014, it was for a spontaneous, weekend-‐long exploration of shared musical passions.   You can rely on Holland's Music From Memory imprint to deliver the most entrepreneurial of reissues, and this latest unearthing of Denis Mpunga's lost tapes just about tops their list of best releases. We've been big fans of this label since the start, but coming up with a long-lost cassette LP that sounds as fresh as this is quite a feat for any sort of record label. Originally from Liege in Belgium, Mpunga has been lost in the depths of time, but we can safely say that this album could be from a distant future. Charged with a noticeable Congolese influence, these strange and improvisational post-punk tunes are the most devilish dance experiments that you'll find this week, and perhaps even this year. The whole LP is a perfect balance of abstraction and soulfulness, having the ability to please a whole array of different listeners and music aficionados. If anything, you absolutely must give the sublime groove of "Funyaka" a go. What a record!

  La Differencia, Dutch singer Hubertus Richenel Baars' 1982 debut, has long been considered something of a slept-on classic by those in the know. Charmingly lo-fi and homemade in feel, the cassette's 10 tracks - six of which are featured on this first ever vinyl reissue - brilliantly joined the dots between blue-eyed soul, spacey electro, disco, electrofunk and slap-bass wielding space boogie. As usual, Music From Memory has done a terrific job with the re-mastering; the tracks sound stronger than ever, if even they have retained some of the charming fuzziness of Baars' original production.   Music From Memory has a reputation for doing the unexpected. It would be fair to say that few would have predicted the Dutch label's decision to release a collection "electronic and contemporary music from Brazil". As usual, the Red Light Records affiliated crate-digging crew has done a superb job with Outro Tempo, which was compiled by label affiliate John Gomez. Musically, it's predictably varied but always beautiful. It mostly focuses on tracks that fuse traditional Brazilian instrumentation, percussion and musical ideas, with elements of electronica, ambient, jazz-fusion and Reich style minimalism. The accompanying liner notes do a great job in putting the collection in context, explaining how the music was often inspired by political changes within Brazil during the 1980s.

  Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good.   In typical Music From Memory fashion, their latest archival release shines a light on one of the UK's lesser-known bands of the early 1980s. The System released a lone single in 1981, followed by a now incredibly rare debut album, Logic, in 1983. Three of the cuts here are taken from that set, including the dreamy, downbeat Balearic-pop opener "Almost Grown" - a wonderfully evocative six minutes, all told - and the far-sighted, spacey, proto-techno shuffler "Vampirella". This EP also includes one previously unreleased track, "Find It In Your Eyes", which was rescued from long-forgotten master tapes during the licensing process.

  Music From Memory has always been good at unearthing unusual or unheard music, with last year's Michael Turtle 12", Are You Psychic? - a madcap trip into outer-space electronics first issued in 1983 - being particularly revelatory. Here, they unleash a superb 15-track collection of the producer's work, which is entirely made up of music originally recorded in and around the time of the sessions for his sole solo album, 1983's Music From The Living Room. Thrillingly, only two of the tracks have previously seen the light of day. As you might expect, it's wonderfully hard to pin down, with turtle variously fusing dubbed-out electronics, spacey jazz influences, African rhythms, new age melodies, weird pop, undulating drum machine rhythms, and - most curiously of all - odd spoken word vocals.
