Back in the mid 1980s, Jun Fukamachi decided to establish his own label, Nicole. It didn't last very long. In fact, the imprint only ever put out one record: a promo-only collection of untitled instrumentals called '86 Spring & Summer Collection: Instrumental Images. Here, that hard-to-find set gets the reissue treatment for the first time. Heavily influenced by mid-1980s film and TV soundtracks, contemporaneous new age ambient and expressive experimental jazz, the synthesizer and drum machine heavy collection sounds like it was designed to showcase Fukamachi's library music credentials. Crucially, though, it contains some superb, life-affirming compositions that should thrill those who have been enjoying the previous reissues of both WRWTFWW and Holland's Music From Memory.

It's not often we get an insight into the electronic music of South America, so all hail the arrival of Calypso from Mexico's Inigo Vontier and Argentina's Thomass Jackson. The tracks featured certainly strike a unique chord, with Mendrix weaving a seductive, noirish tale full of brooding guitar and slow ticking drums, while "Colossio" takes on a darkwave tone on the wonderfully creepy "Esta En Mi". The label bosses tackle the B side, with Jackson's "Fantomas" sporting a sharper dancefloor sensibility without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Vontier rounds the EP out with the weirdo boogie throwdown of "Namaste", sure to pique the interest of anyone locked into the sound coming out of the speakers.

What have we here? Unless I'm much mistaken (which I never am), this is the long awaited, presumed lost collaboration between Growing Bin's Basso and UK-DIY dub-wave priestess Brenda Ray. If you've been landlocked for the past few years I'll give you the scoop straight from the swell. The Hamburg digger cut a little Swiss harp into a gorgeous groove, but found an important ingredient was missing. Who better to make the magic happen than musical genius Brenda Ray, who sang, whispered and wove a melodica spell, bringing it all together into a Balearic masterpiece. Insanely limited, beautifully turned out (check that sleeve by Jiro Bevis!) and all round amazing, each copy sold will secure a charitable donation. Bueno.

Description:

Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.

Sharif Laffrey is one of the great unsung heroes of Detroit's dance music scene, having been instrumental in putting on parties in the Motor City for many years and spinning records in all kinds of legendary spots. When he's not busy promoting, Laffrey also finds time to turn out productions under aliases such as Quadrant and Maersk. Primarily though, his recent work has been under his own name for the likes of Love On The Rocks and Discos Capablanca, who he returns to here with a single sided sure shot entitled "Always". It's a heated, jacking club track that screams of Laffrey's Detroit roots, with an early house thrust and wild 80s-style sampling that will set the party alight.
