Vakula's illicit edit series continues with a seriously heavyweight offering. Number 5 contains clever tweaks on War's "Galaxy" and Emerson's "Sending All My Love Out", two pillars of jazz-funk and electro-boogie respectively and well due a night out on the town at your local discotheque! Emerson's joint is particularly sought after, still demanding four and a half ton online after being made mahoosive by one Tom Noble. Final scores are 2-1, with Vakula pinching one back at the last minute through the rather inspired A2, a perc heavy disco-boogie cut with solid slappy B, nice girly chorus and plenty of wigged out guitar scratches.

Hot on the heels of the VEDIT crew's second sold-out 10" comes volume three. As usual, there's no info about either the tracks going under the scalpel or those involved, just a trio of on-point reworks to add sparkle to your DJ sets. We're particularly enjoying the A-side interpretation, which offers a spacey and lightly dubbed version of a fizzing disco-funk number full of spiraling synthesizer solos, spacey effects, clipped guitars and sweaty drum solos. On the flipside the publicity-shy scalpel fiends first rearrange a Clavinet and electric piano-solo laden disco-funk wriggler before dipping their toes into the multi-coloured world of cosmic disco with predictably impressive results.

The release kicks off with a warm, filtered and looped sample work out featuring disco guitar licks and a simple, infectious key melody executed in typically raw Art Department fashion. Given his longevity and productivity, we were rather surprised to find that this is not only Delano Smith's first 12" of 2018, but also his first new single of any sort since 2016. He naturally hits his stride straight away on A-side "They're Coming", a deep, druggy and hypnotic affair marked out by whispered vocal samples, gently mind-altering electronic riffs, dubbed-out chords and a locked-in, early morning groove. Flipside "Safe Place" is, if anything, even deeper, with Smith wrapping slowly throbbing chords around a chunky bassline and a breezier rhythm track. It's the sort of ultra-deep box jam that you just want to snuggle up to when you're finding it hard to sleep at five in the morning.

It's a classic sound twisted up four ways, delivered with that soulful touch and addictive garage bump that Kerri defined from the get go. The "6:23 Rage Mix" is a heady brew, while "Psycho X 6:23" brings a more forthright party slant to the track. The soul is strongest on closer "6:23 Shelter Mix" as the vocal from The Temptations takes centre stage.

The musicians behind this project were composer and keyboardist George Theodorakis and ex-Sharp Ties guitarist and founding member Petros Skoutaris - both young veterans of the Athens music scene in the late 70s/late 80s. Into the light proudly picks four utterly spellbinding highlights of this totally unheard material.
