After a debut outing on International Black last year with his best friend Mallard, LT graduates onto Rhythm Section INTL with a stunning debut solo effort: FOREST FLOOR. Aged just 20 years old, Lewis Taylor aka LT is another prodigal talent from the north of England, whose association with Rhythm Section goes back to his school days. A fan of the label from an early age, Lewis regularly made pilgrimages to the pool hall as soon as he was old enough to do so. It was these visits with his old school friend Mallard (who had recently moved down to London from Derbyshire to study music) which proved to be a formative influence, prompting him to try his hand at production...It turned out he was quite the natural, with his second ever effort as an 18 year old making it onto this very EP.

Maurice Agad, the writer responsible for "Tabala Mouv," was traced to the Caribbean island of Martinique, and it only helps feed into the exotic atmosphere surrounding the music. In its original form "Tabala Mouv" is a plush, richly produced groover laden with slap bass, strings, keys, horns and a wonderful meandering vocal. Roy beefs the track up with a rework that subtly edges a few modern touches into the mix, while Truccy offers up a simple edit of the track in its purest form.

If Eli Escobar's recent Shout album was inspired by his frustration at the state of the World right now (and, in particular, the politics of the United States), then this 12" could be seen as something of an artistic release. Inspired by little more than the desire to have a good time with like-minded souls, it showcases two more tasty re-edits from the producer's personal stash. A-side "Africa" is an inspired version of a piano-fuelled modern soul gem, with elements of the source track being joined by bubbly new machine drums and a few subtle touches. Flipside "Take It From Me", a rolling, bass-heavy deep house cut crafted using rubbery jazz and gospel samples, sounds like a life-affirming peak-time anthem in the making.

Elsewhere "In The Mood" is so warm you could spark your cigar from it; oozing soul in the plucked bass and swooning synths, it leads to more upbeat fair in the form of the Detroit-tuned electro boogie "Sparkling Mango" and a woozy dreamy finale in the wavey, melting tones of "Out In The Night". Hella dope.

As well as all the jazz and funk, Best Italy are also dab hands at digging out Italo disco gems that pretty much qualify as proto house jams for their heavy spinning by the seminal Chicago DJs like Ron Hardy. This essential transmission from Amnesie is a fine case in point, a one hit wonder originally released in 1983 appropriately enough on Proto Records. Now "Turas" makes a welcome return, sounding resplendent in both vocal and instrumental versions, but the real treat for the dedicated diggers is the previously unreleased dub version mixed by legendary DJ Tony Carrasco. That's the jam that will have eclectic spinners getting in a lather.

Soul Clap definitely knew what they were doing when they snapped up certifiable diva legend Nona Hendryx to sing on one of the cuts from their self-titled 2016 album. Now Ray Mang has got his mitts on the parts to "Shine (This Is It)" and turned out three versions for his own Mangled label - the classic combination of extended vocal, instrumental and radio edit versions. Whichever cut suits you best, the vibe is the same; a bold and bright summer party track splashed with horns, keys and plenty more besides, although the smart money is on Hendryx's legendary vocal, which soars as though no time has passed since her days working with Material in 80s NYC.
