This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

Man Power has proven on many occasions to be adept at all manner of different moods within the hardware house canon, but on this occasion he's particularly focusing on creating an exotic feeling out of mechanical means. "Tropical Bastard" is a fitting title for this project for Not An Animal Records, with the original steeped in driving patterns of rhythm and melody that approximate a flavour of far flung lands while mutating the feeling into something more club-minded.

Not An Animal Records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the London-based party Bad Passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of Man Power, Ess O Ess and Eric Duncan to release on the label. Now they turn to James Hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on To Rack & Ruin and Me Me Me. On this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. "Literate" is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can't get enough of, while "Buried Answers" takes a skippier but no less moody approach. On the remix front, Jamie Blanco takes the prize, turning "Buried Answers" into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

Eric Duncan may be best known for his sterling work in Rub N Tug amongst many other projects, but now he's also to be found cruising the highways and byways of the late night disco underworld under his own name. This release on Not An Animal represents everything you want to hear in a sleazy party spot, with throbbing arpeggios and shimmering lead lines hovering in a perfect retro-futurist reverie that comes on like second nature to the NYC producer. Daniele Baldelli and Marco Dionigi turn in a remix of "Shut It" that raises the temperature a touch without losing that addictive veneer, making this a record perfect for all kinds of neon-lit abandon.

After a three-year absence, former Redux and Cynic duo Machete Savane (AKA Saul Richards and Andy Bainbridge of Bad Passion Project) return to action. Fittingly, it comes on Bad Passion Project's Not An Animal Records. "Manticore" is something of a treat for those who like their disco electronic, atmospheric and doused in perm-sporting rock and '80s AOR influences (think winding guitar solos, Italo-disco arpeggio lines, punk-funk bass, and spacey electronics). It comes backed with two contrasting remixes: a throbbing, disco-tech revision from ESP Institute regular, and an ambient re-invention from Jonny Nash. The latter's alternately glistening and dreamy version is as sublime as you'd expect.

Not An Animal arrive at their third release in the company of Lizards (definitely an animal), a collaborative project from Lee Forster (1/3 Last Waltz) and James Hadfield (the mainstay of the Elizabeth Collective). On the menu are a pair of deep, danceable Balearic house gems garnished with a rich and flavourful remix from esteemed ex pat Max Essa. Taking aim at the epic, anthemic dancefloor stylings of the Japanese underground, "Tanni" takes over the whole of the A-side, leading us on a 9 minute journey through cascading keys, swelling synths and driving percussion. It's a one way ticket to eyes closed, arms aloft euphoria. On the flip "International Track" sees the duo incorporate off beat percussion artifacts, psychedelic synth fx and tropical textures into a floaty trip into Balearic beat ecstasy. Ironically, it falls to the Japanese based Max Essa to take us back to the Med, lending a euro pop lilt to the track, softening the beats and adding delicate 80s digital melodies to keep us dancing til dawn.
