Slinky, goofy and good for a right old knees up, this is technicolour tackle for the zaniest DJs. For their first release of 2018, Toy Tonics stalwarts Black Loops is joined in the studio by fellow Italian producer Innocent Soul, head honcho of the recently launched Strictly Street Sounds imprint. The EP's four tracks offer a perfect blend of the former's groovy, chunky deep house sound and the sample-heavy, Chicago-inspired disco-house jams favoured by the latter. Highlights include "Black Soul", a funk-fuelled peak-time jam rich in Hamilton Bohannon style guitar loops and elastic bass guitar samples, the James Brown break-fired weightiness of "Bang the Dancefloor" and the squidgy deep house funk of "The Flame", which boasts a particularly rush-inducing breakdown.

The Japanese producer and DJ Kuniyuki Takahashi is the subject of Music From Memory’s latest retrospective compilation with ‘Early Tape Works - 1986-1993’. Composed of two volumes, the compilations gather together a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tape only albums, highlighting a fascinating early period in Kuniyuki’s musical output, one of which little is known. Driven to develop a musical language derived as much by an exploration of music technology and a desire to create new sounds, Kuniyuki was also looking to evolve the possibilities of what he refers to as a ‘new Oriental sound’. Early Tape Works - 1986-1993’ then brings together two albums of material which not only highlights the evolution of Kuniyuki’s own work but also of Japanese electronic music as a whole.

The first ever vinyl reissue of Mr. Wollogallu, the collaboration album between Carlos Maria Trindade and Nuno Canavarro, originally released in Portugal on Uniao Lisboa, Producoes Audiovisuais Lda. in 1991. The collaboration began when the manager Antonio Cunha, a mutual friend of both musicians, brought the two together for a performance. Afterwards they decided to embark on Mr. Wollogallu. They had never worked together before, although their careers had parallels between them. Both were part of the 80s Portuguese pop-rock scene: Carlos Maria Trindade had played with Corpo Diplomatico and Herois do Mar, while Nuno Canavarro played in Street Kids and Delfins. Moreover, individually, Carlos Maria had released the single Princesa / Em Campo Aberto (Vimusica, 1982), and Nuno had done the LP Plux Quba (Ama Romanta, 1988), now recognized worldwide for its uniqueness.

Next up on Huntleys + Palmers Highlife edit series is label staple Auntie Flo, serving up a remix of Grammy Award-winning, Malian Wassoulou musician Oumou Sangare's "Djoukourou". Her career has spanned two decades and the track was featured on last years 'Mogoya LP', her seventh studio album. Dreamy and drifting spiritual life music that doesn't get much better than this - it was apparently rinsed by Innervisions boss Dixon a lot during the Summer of 2016. It's complimented by a brand new original on the flip entitled "Desert Island" which keeps on with the lush and evocative vibes. Amusingly, Apparel Music is marketing mystery producer Apparel Wax as "the vinyl-faced artist who tears dancefloors apart". While we don't doubt the latter, we'd be very surprised if his chops really were made from polyvinyl. Regardless, the mysterious figure is a producer on the rise. This second EP, which comes hot on the heels of a sold-out debut last autumn, contains another quartet of high quality cuts. The son of sleeve-face begins with the breezy warmth of "Track 1", where a disco-era soul cut is transformed into a rolling deep house gem, before strolling into more traditional U.S deep house pastures via "Track 2". Flip for the teased-out disco stomp of "Track 3" and the jazzy brilliance of "Track 4", which boasts some particularly tasty electric piano solos.

Earl has been with Ten Thousand Yen for longer than you may think. Indeed, this shadowy producer is already responsible for some fine dancefloor moments. "The Goose" on Welsh label Catapult,. the C in C.R.S.T. from some of TTY's earliest releases to the spanking "Goodfoot" EP as Chesus and more recently his twisted disco remix of Daneeka's "What's it Gonna Be?" with Seven Davis Jr. As Earl Jeffers he's really found his sound and this is one of his strongest Eps to date. These tunes have been flaming all year in the clubs. "Gloria" and "Pleasure Signal" unloading that thick, heavy, looped up funk which should roll out of the festival soundsystems like treacle. "Return To Forever" gets two outings on the B-side; upping the intensity somewhat as Jeffers fires some blasting mainroom techno at our ears. Proper essential stuff.
