"Deeper" was originally featured on Matthew Herbert's Part Two EP, way back in 1996. Since then, that particular 12" has become something of an in-demand item, with the lead cut naturally attracting the most attention. This issue of "Deeper" contains Herbert's original in all its glory - think loopy, low-slung, jazz-flecked hypo-house with woozy, early morning breakdowns - and a fresh remix from label-hopping producer Stuart Li under his familiar Basic Soul Unit alias. He subtly beefs up and speeds up the track, adding some Detroit-influenced keys and fizzing new percussion. The result is a tasty techno revision that pays due reverence to Herbert's thrilling original.

From their base in Los Angeles, intrepid musical voyagers Pharaohs have imagined a place far from the city for their first stand alone release on International Feel. "While we were working on this record I was reading a book 'Crossings' by surfer journalist Michael Kew," says Pharaohs co-founder Sam Cooper. "A lot of the music was inspired by his travels in the South Pacific, his imagery, the way he talked about places and how there were still undiscovered places in the world. I was immersing myself in this tropical island world. I guess this is my idea of what I'd want to hear if I was out there."

Here at Quantize we simply love confounding expectations 'cos, guess what? We love all kinds of music and don't like to be stereotyped. But this one even surprised the hell out of us - so much so that we figured it deserved a 7" vinyl release in tribute to the original format. "Think (About It)" was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery Lyn Collins. Produced by the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown, it barely scraped into the RnB Top 10 at the time and normally would have faded into time as just another great James Brown produced record but in 1987, it started to get sampled by a new generation of Hip-Hop artists like Roxanne Shante and Robe Base and DJ E-Z Rock.

Peeping right over into the house canyon while retaining all of Italo's sophistication, Ricky Montanari's Key Tronics Ensemble was a driving force in the sound during the early 90s. "House Of Calypso" was their debut, and it came with finessed, emotional key-stroking hook that lifts relentlessly. The remix version features a dizzying solo on the peak, the softhouse version is a little more spacious and lighter in the drums. For most, though, it's straight to the Paradise version - an out-and-out Balearic anthem that's still enraptures 27 years later. Its first repress in 10 years, this is long overdue.

Description:

There's been plenty to cheer on the six previous releases by Aleksandr Voznichenko's MOI project, so hopes are naturally high for this seventh EP. He's in an unusually positive frame of mind on side A, wrapping a bouncy, rolling, bass-heavy deep house groove in subtle but spacey synth motifs and languid, starry melodies. There's a similar feel to the slightly more percussive flipside cut, whose combination of chunky snares, solid kicks, skipping cymbals and fluid, new age inspired melody lines consistently hits the mark. There's woozy warmth to both tracks, too, making them both picturesque and undeniably floor-friendly.

When it comes to variations on tech-house and deep house themes, Chris Duran AKA Sonodab has a quietly impressive track record. Predictably, this 12" - the Barcelona-based producer's first of 2017 - is pretty tasty, too. He begins in confident fashion via the bubbling analogue bass, drowsy chords and crispy drum machine percussion of "Sonold", before doffing a cap to vintage UK tech-house (think late 1990s rather than mid 2000s) on the spacey-but-punchy "Aporia". On the B-side you'll find the Swag-does-dream house lusciousness of "Random Nights", and the punchy, deep space electro roller that is "Elecmann".

Description:

Zona Del Silencio or the Zone of Silence is an area deep in the Mexican desert. It is the home of several rare, mutant species of animals (including the purple cactus and a malformed version of the desert tortoise). The area’s name derives from an odd anomaly that prohibits radio waves from transmitting inside the zone. When asked about the strange phenomena, the locals invariably reply that they do not see strange things in the desert, only strange people. Play this record three times and the IDWT gang will appear in your mirror and smoke you out.
