'Tripping among the stars' indeed. The 'other' version of this jam lifted from the 'Sweetened - No lemon' LP from 1994 is maybe a little better known, but these mixes right here are worthy of all your attention too! 3 non-stop funk excursions into the cosmos with Derrick and Co. joining you and guiding you with their cosmic voices. It's hard to pick a favourite as all included are very different beasts yet somehow essential. Honestly, this EP kinda shits on most things that you may hear currently and this stuff is from 1997.

Following excellent releases from Skatebard, Les Crocodiles and Lunar Concept amongst many others, Pleasure Unit turn to Cut The Rug crew member Mike Misiu for their latest instalment of cool-headed modern disco. "Do What You Need" sports a Metro Area demeanour, with a classic vocal hook sprinkled in at opportune moments for maximum impact. The dub mix is no less satisfying, even with the famous sample rubbed out, but in fact the real pleasant surprise of this release is B2 jam "Love Talk". With its funky midtempo 90s breakbeat and heavy-hitting piano, it's an addictive party starter that harks back to the acid jazz days while still fitting right into the here and now.

I can honestly say, hand on heart, that when I saw this on my pre sale list my heart sank. One of the many things the world doesn't need in 2017 is a rework Of Nomad's 'I Wanna Give You Devotion' I thought but, props to Pangea if I heard this in a club I'd be all over it. It combines a heavy bass with MDMA strings in perfect fashion. Massive. On the B he takes a Loleatta Holloway acapella and works it as a dj tool, you might not play the whole track but if you’re the kind of dj who is easily bored you’ll have plenty of fun with this on the third deck. All in all a strong two sider and a complete surprise, I always like it when I'm completely wrong about something. Not that it happens that often, obviously...

It's also the first time since 2014's aforementioned Bepu N'Gali release that he has worked with a full band and sees The Grunewald Quartet return to string duties after collaborating on Barrott's Sketches from an Island 2 album last year. The Bside, Music for Santoor, Bansuri, Tanpura y Sarod is another track recorded live during one of his spring meditation sessions in Northern Ibiza, with India's Vishnu Quartet performing a 2 hour piece with Barrott directing and later editing it down into the form you hear today.

This week Best Italy take their reissue romp of Roman rarities down to the infamous Rimini discotheque Cellophane. Crafted as a tribute to the 80s club, "Gimme Love" is an absolute gem of an Italo record, pitched at the more subtle end of the spectrum without ditching the hallmarks of the style. The bass arpeggio still thrums with purpose and the vocals revel in a bath of vocoder processing, but the camp histrionics are replaced here with a more measured delivery that should go down a storm in all kinds of different sets. As well as the original version on the A, the B-side features the Italian version of the track.

Since launching back in 2015, the Dewaele brothers' Waffles series has been responsible for some of the best re-edits around. The series' genius lies not in the floor-friendly nature of the showcased reworks - that goes without saying - but in the unashamedly weird and wonderful source material the Belgian siblings choose to play around with. Few will know the original version of "Poland Waffle", a sludgy and sleazy mutant disco workout full of heavy, dub disco style bass, hypnotic drums, alien electronics and a half-sung, half-whispered vocal refrain ("Red light... blue light"). As for "Croatia White", you'll struggle to find a more muscular and mind-altering chunk of post-Italo European disco. In other words, this serving of Waffles is every bit as tasty as its predecessors.

Andres, DJ Seinfeld & Osunlade make up the second EP of remixes from the Trus'me Planet 4 LP. Andres steps up in fine form with a beautifully subtle take on Dark Flow. He expertly brightens the original, accentuating the strings & rolling an addictive break into the mix. Reminiscent of his early KDJ releases. Classic Andres! Man of the moment DJ Seinfeld takes Here & Now and revamps it into a intriguingly restrained & evocative piece. Almost a refrain. Everything is stripped back and sonically twisted. He coaxes the track with shuffling, smudged drums & ethereal piano whilst the mood is deepened by dusty & distorted layers. Finally So High is treated to an outstanding Yoruba Soul treatment. Osunlade bends things to his will, losing the insistence of the original. He deftly finds space in the groove, adding ear worm keys & creating a wonderful warmth with economic dubs.

Since starting their career with a couple of well-regarded EPs on Toy Tonics in 2013, Black Loops has been label hopping. This return to the German imprint follows four years spent churning out EPs for Gruuv, Neovinyl and, most recently, Pets Recordings. Opener "Le Mirage" is a bustling and bass-heavy affair, with melodic deep house pleasantries wrapping themselves around a chunky, U.S-garage influenced groove. The rhythmic skip and bass-heavy bounce continues on "Red Light", where fuzzy electric piano parts come to the fore, while "Sex (Part 2)" effortlessly joins the dots between the hazy loveliness of Italian dream house and the bustle of classic Kerri Chandler records. 'Sex", which boasts a wonderfully sleazy spoken vocal, completes another ear-pleasing package.
