Justin Van Der Volgen's My Rules label is back with its second release of 2016, the Lee Douglas edit of Soulful Dynamics "Jungle People". The Hamburg-based Liberian outfit recorded this afro-tinted disco funker in 1976, with original 12" copies currently fetching big money on Discogs. Approved by the band, this is the version you've heard and been looking out for over the last few years (unless you've been shaking it to the original in the latter hours of Coastin'). Now finally seeing a proper release after many requests. Called by Resident Advisor a "Mareh anthem" referring to the New Year's Eve festival in Brazil and rinsed by DJs like Tim Sweeney, Psychemagick, and Eddie C, this record is pure disco-funk heat. Lee Douglas takes the original, teases out the arrangement and turns the psychedelic knob to 100. Simply stated, putting this record on is like pushing the button labeled "PARTY TIME".

On this club-ready two-tracker, Hot Creations has recruited two suitably heavyweight producers to remix tracks from Phil Kieran's 2016 full-length, Blinded By The Sun. Sometime Alter Ego man Roman Flugel steps up first, delivering a suitably trippy version of "No Life" that builds up into a bouncy, late night tribal techno treat following a creepy, clandestine beginning. The German producer makes great use of a rubbery synth bassline, atmospheric synth lines and dense percussion. On the flip, Andrew Weatherall takes a slightly different approach on his version of "Find Love". While the remix is suitably bass heavy and throbbing, it feels a little more positive and loved-up thanks the veteran producer's use of bubbly electronic melodies and sweeping synth-strings.

A couple of years back, Rafael Top Secret - a selector known for digging deep for inspiration - delivered a tidy re-edit of "Sekele I Like It", a previously little-known Afro-boogie cut by French artist Robert "Bobby" Helms. Copies of the 1980 album it came from, Lay Down, Girl, now go for serious money, prompting this licensed reissue. Helms' brilliant, horn-totin' original is accompanied by another cut from that album, "Feet On The Ground" - a straight-up disco affair - and two new flipside remixes. Baptman and Betino's "Philly Vibe" mix of "Sekele I Like" is a largely instrumental interpretation that includes some killer electric piano solos, with Vas Moody's "Feet On The Ground" remix taking that track in a tightly-wound dub disco direction.

On the flip you'll find the equally intoxicating and mind-altering "Sun, Sun, Sun", where chanted vocals - in tribute to that big orange ball in the sky - rise over a metronomic synth bassline and an African-influenced rhythm track. It's a chunk of genuine dancefloor voodoo just crying out to be played at sunset and sunrise.

Why Why Why by the Woodentops is a turntable hit in the birth of the Balearic club scene. Arriving first in 1985 as a mix by Adrian Sherwood, a regular Amnesia track and again in 1987, as a live and far more up-tempo version from a number one live album. The live version became one of the first anthems in Ibiza. Hearing and witnessing the record played, the UK holidaymakers and Dj's brought the track back as they started new clubs, Shoom, Boys own, Spectrum, Future, the Trip, based on what they had witnessed.

It's astonishing to think that Frak's Borft Records has now notched up three decades. The Swedish imprint remains as eccentric and essential as ever, as this label debut from inspired Norwegian oddball DJ Sotofett proves. By his standards, "Ol Pa Ibiza" and the stripped back "Ol Pa Klubb" are pretty straightforward, with the Sex Tags man laying ricocheting dub notes and percussion hits over a rock solid drum track and booming bassline. "Ol Pa SM-Art Bar" sees him channel the spirit of early British bleep techno and the darker end of Belgian new beat on a clandestine mid-tempo chugger, while "Drikkepause" is a quick-fire shot of ambience built around echoing bells. Finally, he heads for a dirty warehouse on the acid-laden, EBM informed sleaziness of "Nekta Ol Par City Club".

For the latest volume in their ongoing Brazil 45s series, Mr Bongo has decided to change tack. The two tracks showcased here are from the golden age of Brazilian boogie. On the A-side you'll find Marcos Valle's "A Paraiba Nao E Chicago", a largely overlooked cut from his 1981 full-length Vontade De Rever Voce. While not as instantly as infectious as some of his better-known singles, it's still superb; a breezy, blue-eyed soul cut full of rising horns and sweet Portuguese vocals. On the B-side, you'll find Don Beto's 1978 disco-funk jam "Nao Quero Mais", a superb track that was seemingly inspired by the Doobie Brothers' "Long Train Running".
