The A side burns hot right out of the gate with the explosive and percussive Soca-disco pulse of 'They Came To New York', then settles into the laid back lilt of 'Zouk Pour Esa'.On the flip, 'Disco Massamba' is a wild ride of an Afro-disco burner and 'Parang-A-Teng' brings it back to the Western hemisphere for some Latin-tinged funk from Barbados. Well worth it for the value of the original source material alone, this 12' is nothing short of dance floor destruction!

Brainchild of Multi Culti A&R, Sascha Funke and Niklas Wandt were introduced by Dreems, who charted a course for the seasoned Berlin-based producer and funky multi-percussionist and singer. Wandt was just about to enter the scene forcefully with his collaborative 2LP with Wolf Muller and the debut single of his band Neuzeitliche Bodenbelage. In the icey cold of his warehouse rehearsal space, Funke had him record a variety of slapped, bowed and scratched percussions (congas, talking drum, prepared cymbals played with a bass bow) over his tracks. These first efforts were later expanded into joint sessions at Sascha's home studio and, within a few weeks, the journey reached it's destination: Wibe strasse, Deutschland.

It's weird and wonderful - enticing you deeper and deeper with every added element, from the wonky glitches, to the fuzzed out, Middle Eastern guitar and exotic vocals refrains. Take to the B side and you're hit with a rhythmic workout combining modular electronics, sci-fi infused samples and intergalactic synthwork. Rounding off the e.p. 'It isn't about that' is a downtempo beatsy number, laced with dubbed out effects and an introspective monologue about the merits of music as medium of expression.

'Use Your imagination' by 'blue-eyed' Funky rock combo Kokomo is a deep cut from the pre-Disco era of 1975. A time when uptempo R&B and Rock records like this were de rigueur with DJ's and dancers on the dancefloor's of clubs across NYC and all major cities where 'proper' dance music was appreciated and taken seriously. The years leading up to the Disco boom blessed us with some fantastic records like this that carried over into that late 70's era, 'classics' that still got love from the DJ's and were sequenced alongside the hits and anthems of the day. Featuring members of Joe Cocker's Grease Band, Kokomo had a few hits and were widely known, 'Use Your imagination' though, was their nightclub classic, a breezy, jazzy and funky jam that rolls just right and is incredibly rare and sought after on promo 12".

"Be Free" is equally deep, a shuffled house beat keeping us completely locked in while fluttering Rhodes and a full vocal give the track its song like structure. "Show U Love" is my personal favourite, DJ Deep taking plenty of elements from the OG but makin' em squeal and bounce a bit more manically, transforming it from a smooth gliding deep house into a more elbow-out, chunky number that'll stimulate 2k18's fervent yoot much more than the original.

Going into the studio they had their lead single “Blue Monday” , a cheap sounding drinking song that was similar to everything else on the radio at the time. They hoped this would get people dancing on weekends before having to back to work hungover on Monday. They were confident in their lead single but needed a song to put on the b - side. They quickly put together a new song “Open Your Heart ( Vula )” which had a natural feel reminiscent of the pre MIDI early 80s disco sound. It would perfectly blend the use of Synths and Keyboards, funky guitar licks, all supporting the amazing vocals sang by Jabu. It would be this last minute filler that would capture the ear of DJ’s and music lovers 30 years after its release.
