Three-quarters of the way through 2018, Ricardo Villalobos finally serves up his first solo release of the year. The Chilean has said very little about the two-tracker, merely serving up sound clips with no fanfare or fuss. Fans will enjoy "Wispa", with the producer's signature buried spoken word samples and intoxicating audio textures playing second fiddle to a driving kick-drum pattern and druggy, TB-303 style acid line. "909 Track" is, if anything, even bolder. While it's as hypnotic and trippy, the beats bounce, the acid lines pop and the main riff - a relentless, warehouse-friendly affair - drives the cut forward with restless energy. An impressive departure from his tried-and-tested blueprint.

Church's latest release - a rather tasty, two-track ten-inch single - comes courtesy of South London sorts DJ Malcolm and Dabriel Garius. A-side "Lulo", a jazzy deep house cut smothered in expansive piano solos, dreamy synth chords and sampled female vocals, is particularly potent, with the duo expertly layering up the percussion to give the track a sun-kissed, carnival-friendly feel. Flipside "Guava" displays a similar jazz influence, with the duo trading electric piano and trumpet solos over elastic synth bass and swinging, semi-broken deep house grooves. It's what we imagine a contemporary collaboration between Phil Asher and 2000Black boys Dego and Kaidi Tatham would sound like, which is high praise indeed.

Obscure 1980s Brazilian lo-fi synth LP re-issued and remastered for the first time. Soundway Records delivers a beautifully remastered reissue of Brazilian duo Grupo Controle Digital’s only album, “A Festa E Nossa”. First released in 1988, the album is now housed in a tip-on heavyweight sleeve with restored artwork. With the title track “A Festa E Nossa” having circulated the last few years in the DJ sets of influential tastemakers, the album has become highly sought after by electronic fans and collectors alike. Lo-fi synths and cruising bass lines permeate the record, influenced by the group’s Brazilian contemporaries at the time such as Tim Maia, Claudio Zoli, Secos E Molhados, and rock outfit Made In Brazil.

While he's gone on to produce some of the most wild, eccentric and inspired deep house of the last decade, Julien 'Pepe Bradock' Auger will always be remembered for his 1999 classic, "Deep Burnt". The epic track remains a staple in many deep house DJs' sets some 16 years after its initial release, and original copies demand a high price in second-hand stores. Here, he's relented to the pressure and re-released it. While the release is called Deep Burnt Edits, the cheeky Frenchman appears not to have done anything at all to the original (the flipside title of "The Surprise Is There Is No Surprise" being something of a giveaway). Regardless, it should be an essential purchase for those who don't own the original, with its heart-aching string samples, rolling chords and tactile electronics.

Side A boasts the ultra-deep thrust of "Deeper", where mutilated vocal samples and pots-and-pans percussion hits rise above a Chez Damier influenced deep house groove. Over on side B, "Non-Stop" is insanely bass-heavy (check the speaker-busting sub-bass) and crunchy, while "Shuffler" sees Herbert peppering a jazzy and swinging groove with impeccable electric piano solos.

Music From Memory’s latest release sees the reissue of G.B. Beckers' 'Walkman' album from 1982. A painter and musician from Aachen, Germany, Gunther Beckers created his third album ’Walkman' to coincide with an exhibition of his latest body of artwork in 1982. Released on his very own 'Milky Music' label with a run of just 500 copies and original pieces of artwork included with some copies, most copies of the album however remained amongst art collectors and with the painter himself. Rediscovered a few years ago through a friend of Music From Memory in the archives of a local radio station where all but one of the stations copies had been destroyed, it has been an album the label have been in love with since the first listen.

Originally conceived as a book of 6 poems that developed into a record released independently in 1986, Universo Da Ilha sits at the cross-section of many different genres. Connecting contemporary New Age and ambient minimalist movements with traditional West African and Cape Verdean elements from the past (griot voices, djembe rhythms, melancholic morna), Vasco constructed his own “universe” where, in spite of the isolation of the island at the time, he transcended barriers and created a global record that was ahead of its time Vasco used his own synths and drum machines, and with the help of a small group of friends (Tey Goncalves on percussion, Neney’s amazing griot voice, Luis Morais on sax and flute), he recorded this Not-Balearic-but-Atlantic Ambient odyssey on a 16-channel Peavey mixer directly to an Akai tape recorder without overdubs.
