Since parting company with Going Good a few years back, Nummer has successfully been self-releasing their own forthright machine music. The London-based French duo continues to impress on this first three-track salvo of 2018. Arguably the strongest cut here is A-side "Life Is A Hideout", a muddy and bass-heavy concoction built around bustling breakbeats, foreboding bass, creepy electronics and slowly blossoming synthesizer chords. The track's rhythmic looseness is matched by the dense, dystopian sound soup of "The Magic City" - an impeccably creepy affair that reminded us of mid-'80s Test Department - while "Quiet Nights" sees them successfully play around with pots-and-pans percussion, delay-laden trumpet samples and a mutant acid bassline.

For his debut on Lovefingers' ESP Institute label he ratchets up the intensity by a few dozen notches, basing fearsome A-side "Tangier" around a druggy, full-throttle groove, wild and psychedelic acid lines, snaking Middle Eastern horn solos and the kind of rumbling bassline that will sound awesome blasting out of a meaty soundsystem. B-side "Everything Is Nice" is deeper and groovier in tone, with Laffrey wrapping bleeping melody lines and echoing vocal samples around a crunchy drum machine rhythm. It's very good, even if it does lack the restless energy of the exotic A-side.

Less than three months have passed since the first volume in the Cult Edits series arrived in stores, but already the Multi-Culti crew has rustled up another quartet of weird and wonderful reworks. We're particularly enjoying the bizarre chanted vocals and druggy electrofunk flex of Inigo Vontier's brilliantly madcap "Cha Cha Cha", though the dense, post-punk Afro-tribal romp that is Dreem Lion's "Acid Se Con Do" is also superb. If percussion-laden heaviness is your thing, be sure to check Alex Le Tan's rework, which brilliantly breathes new life into a chant-tastic chunk of carnival ready drum circle insanity.

Those who heard Harvey Sutherland's excellent debut EP for Echovolt, Edges EP, will be familiar with his trademark sound - a toasty, analogue style take on deep house marked out by jazz-funk chord progressions, warming synthesizer melodies and shuffling grooves. He changes the script a little on this EP for Voyage Recordings, though there's still plenty of seductive deep house to enjoy (most notably opener "Oscillate" and the Inskwel style, boogie-influenced loveliness of "Bamboo"). Where the EP really comes into its own, though, is when he tries a different tack. "Old Wars" sounds like Moon B's electrofunk explorations wrapped in a snuggly duvet, while "Close Quarters" successfully fixes Herbie Hancock style synth melodies to loose, cymbal heavy beats.

This time it's the work of Barry Blue and two projects he produced in the early 80s, lovingly re-edited for maximum dancefloor pleasure by Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold (aka gerry Rooney and Joel Martin). Waterford's favourite sons Get Down Edits return with their third round of crafty resplices here. First up, Southern Ireland's Darren 'Daz' Dalton and Martin Roche serve up some decent hooks with what sounds like a certain diggers delight on "Festival (Just Beginning)", while a handy dub version that works those sweltering polyrhythms on "Festival Drums" on the flip. The same infectious riff that Erick Morillo used a while back (on a certain handbag house classic) is also used to wonderful effect on "Two Man Sound" - this one is a respectful edit for serious disco DJs.
